Warehouse Temp Labor Cost in Columbus, Ohio (2026 Bill Rates)

For warehouse and general labor temps in the Columbus area, agency bill rates this fall typically run from about $21 to $28 an hour for entry-level pickers, packers and loaders, and $25 to $34 an hour for certified forklift or reach-truck operators. Those are rough market ranges, not quotes. Your actual rate depends on the pay rate needed to fill the role, the agency markup, the shift, and how much notice you give before the start date.

Columbus is one of the busiest distribution markets in the Midwest, and from late October through December the Rickenbacker, Groveport, Obetz and Etna corridors all compete for the same pool of workers. Below is how a bill rate is put together, which Ohio rules affect it, and how to read a proposal before you sign.

How an agency bill rate is built

Every bill rate has two layers: what the worker takes home per hour, and the markup that sits on top of it.

The pay rate. Ohio's minimum wage is indexed to inflation and adjusted every January 1, and for 2026 it is $11.00 an hour for non-tipped employees at larger employers. Almost no warehouse role in Columbus pays near that floor. The real floor is set by what nearby distribution centers are offering, and during peak season that number moves quickly. If a large fulfillment site down the road raises its starting wage by a dollar, every temp order in that area feels it within weeks.

The markup. The agency is the employer of record, so it carries the costs that come with employing someone, plus its own recruiting, payroll and margin. For Ohio placements, the markup typically covers:

  • Employer FICA (Social Security and Medicare, 7.65% of wages)
  • Federal and Ohio unemployment insurance (FUTA and the state SUTA rate assigned to the agency)
  • Ohio workers' compensation premiums paid to the Ohio Bureau of Workers' Compensation
  • Municipal income tax withholding and filing for the city where the work is done
  • Recruiting, screening, onboarding and payroll administration
  • Overtime exposure and the agency's margin

US staffing markups for light industrial work commonly fall between 25% and 60% over the pay rate. Where a given order lands inside that band depends on volume, length of assignment, the risk class of the work and how much screening you require.

Typical ranges for Columbus roles

The table below shows typical bill rate ranges for common light industrial roles in the Columbus metro for fall 2026. They are labelled estimates meant for budgeting, not offers.

Role Typical pay rate Typical bill rate
General warehouse associate (pick, pack, load) $16 to $19 $21 to $28
Forklift or reach-truck operator (certified) $18 to $23 $25 to $34
Shipping and receiving clerk $17 to $21 $23 to $31
Production line or assembly worker $16 to $20 $21 to $29
Event or moving labor (short shifts) $16 to $20 $23 to $32

Overtime is billed at the overtime pay rate plus markup, so a role that bills $25 at straight time can bill $35 or more past 40 hours in the week.

Ohio rules that show up in your quote

Workers' compensation goes through the state

Ohio is one of a handful of monopolistic workers' compensation states. Employers, including staffing agencies, cannot buy workers' comp from a private insurer and must get coverage through the Ohio Bureau of Workers' Compensation (BWC). Premiums are based on the agency's payroll classifications and claims history. Heavier work such as freezer warehousing or dock loading typically carries higher premiums than packing or light assembly, and that difference flows straight into the markup.

Municipal income tax by work location

Most Ohio cities levy a municipal income tax, and Columbus's rate is 2.5%. Employers generally withhold for the municipality where the work is physically performed. That is a payroll burden for the agency, not an extra line for you, but it is one reason a quote for a site in one suburb can differ slightly from a quote for another.

No state temp agency licence

Unlike Ontario, Ohio does not require temporary help agencies to hold a special state licence. That makes it easier for new agencies to open, which also means the quality of screening, safety training and payroll compliance varies widely. Ask any agency how it handles I-9 verification, site safety orientation and BWC coverage before the first worker shows up.

Federal safety rules still apply on your floor

OSHA treats the host employer and the staffing agency as joint employers for safety purposes. You remain responsible for site-specific hazard training, and any powered industrial truck operator must be trained and evaluated on the equipment at your site under OSHA's forklift standard (29 CFR 1910.178). Agencies that send certified operators still expect you to do a site evaluation before the operator drives.

What raises or lowers your rate

A few factors move a Columbus warehouse bill rate more than anything else:

  • Notice. Orders placed one or two weeks out are filled from a planned pool. Same-day or next-day orders often carry a rush premium or a higher pay rate to get people moving.
  • Shift. Overnight, weekend and split shifts usually need a shift differential of $1 to $3 an hour on pay, which is then marked up.
  • Environment. Freezer and cooler work, heavy lifting over 50 pounds and outdoor yard work all raise both pay and workers' comp cost.
  • Volume and length. A steady crew of 20 for twelve weeks prices differently from three people for two days.
  • Screening. Drug tests, background checks and extended references add cost per hire. Ask for them only where the role needs them.
  • Temp-to-hire terms. If you plan to convert workers, the conversion window and fee affect how the agency prices the assignment upfront.

How to read a staffing proposal

A good proposal for Columbus warehouse work should state, in writing:

  1. The pay rate and bill rate for each role, separately
  2. Overtime and holiday billing rules
  3. Minimum shift length and the cancellation window
  4. What screening is included and what costs extra
  5. Who provides safety gear, and who runs site orientation
  6. Conversion fees and timing if you hire a temp directly

If a quote gives only one blended number with no pay rate, ask for the split. It is the only way to compare agencies fairly and to see whether a low price is coming from a pay rate too low to keep people through the season. Our breakdown of the true cost of a temp worker versus a direct hire walks through that comparison line by line.

Frequently asked questions

How much do temp agencies take from your hourly rate in Ohio?

The agency does not deduct from the worker's pay; it bills the client a markup on top of the pay rate. For light industrial roles in Ohio that markup commonly runs between 25% and 60%. Part of it covers mandatory employer costs such as FICA, unemployment insurance and BWC premiums, and the rest covers recruiting, payroll and margin.

Is it cheaper to hire warehouse workers directly in Columbus?

Per hour, a direct hire is usually cheaper once the person is on payroll. The difference narrows when you count recruiting time, onboarding, turnover, unemployment claims and the cost of carrying people after peak season ends. Temps tend to make the most sense for seasonal peaks and short projects, while long-term roles often favour direct hiring.

How fast can a Columbus agency fill a warehouse order before the holidays?

With a week or more of notice, most light industrial orders can be planned and staffed in stages. Same-day and next-day orders are possible but are harder to fill fully in November and December, when many distribution centers are hiring at once. Placing your peak order in October gives the agency room to recruit and screen.
